Advancing Health Equity
Reimagining public health services with a focus on community health equity, particularly for marginalized and underserved communities.

WEI
Wellness Equity Institute (WEI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a core mission of reimagining the delivery of population and public health services, with a primary emphasis on community health equity. We believe that systems must ensure equitable access, particularly in addressing the needs of historically marginalized and underserved communities.
WEI Functions
-
WEI conducts thorough evaluations of community health landscapes, identifying gaps in healthcare access, outcomes, and resources, especially in marginalized populations.
Enable Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) heat maps using GIS technology to visually connect health outcomes with social, economic, and environmental factors like income, housing, healthcare access, and education. By layering data, these maps highlight high-risk areas with significant health disparities, guiding resource allocation and targeted interventions.
GIS technology also enables real-time updates and predictive modeling, helping stakeholders track progress and adapt strategies. These tools promote data-driven decision-making to reduce inequities and improve health outcomes in underserved communities.
Altogether, these assessments guide targeted interventions and policy recommendations to address disparities.
-
Direct clinical services for key communities: Provide comprehensive, culturally competent healthcare tailored to the unique needs of underserved populations, ensuring equitable access to preventive care, chronic disease management, and other essential health services in the communities that need them most.
-
WEI fosters partnerships with local organizations, healthcare providers, and government agencies to create a network of support for advancing health equity. Collaborative projects are designed to leverage resources and expertise to maximize community impact.
-
WEI offers educational programs and workshops focused on raising awareness about health equity issues, empowering communities with knowledge, and advocating for systemic changes. This includes training community leaders and healthcare providers to better serve underserved populations.
-
Public health research and implementation science on innovative clinical service delivery models for historically marginalized communities: Conduct rigorous research and apply implementation science to develop, evaluate, and scale clinical service delivery models tailored to the unique needs of underserved populations. These efforts aim to address systemic health disparities and improve access to quality care through evidence-based, community-driven solutions.
-
WEI conducts research on public health policies affecting marginalized communities, providing data-driven insights and recommendations to policymakers. Advocacy efforts aim to influence legislation and policy decisions that promote health equity at local, state, and national levels.
-
Improve innovation in healthcare delivery for historically marginalized communities: Develop and implement cutting-edge strategies that address the unique barriers faced by underserved populations, ensuring equitable access to high-quality, culturally responsive care.
Help better align public health and healthcare systems: Foster collaboration between public health agencies and healthcare providers to streamline services, improve resource allocation, and create cohesive strategies that address population health challenges holistically.
-
Capacity building to optimize workforce development, particularly for alternative workforces: Strengthen training programs and resources to empower alternative healthcare workforces, such as Community Health Workers (CHWs), equipping them with the skills and tools needed to effectively address social determinants of health and bridge gaps in care delivery.
Community Health Workers (CHW) taskforce: Establish dedicated task forces to support CHWs through advocacy, professional development, and integration into multidisciplinary teams, enhancing their ability to serve as trusted liaisons between healthcare systems and underserved communities.
